Of course, as anyone who has grown up in Fulton or Callaway County knows, history is something this remarkable corner of the country has quite a lot of…
Founding of Fulton
The first European settlement in what would eventually become known as Callaway County popped up along the banks of the Missouri River in 1808, five years after the United States acquired the land from France through the Louisiana Purchase. The settlement, called Cote Sans Dessein, was intended to be Missouri’s state capital; however, due to problems with the land title, the capital was moved to nearby Jefferson City.
In 1820, Callaway County was created. It is named after Captain James Callaway, the grandson of Daniel Boone. In the summer of 1825, the City of Fulton (originally named Volney) was established and named after Robert Fulton, the inventor of the first commercially successful steamboat.
The Civil War Comes to Callaway County
In 1861, The American Civil War came to Callaway County. Fulton’s early families predominantly came from southern cultures, so when Union soldiers marched into a nearby county the community leaders called residents to defend the town. With most men off fighting the war in the East, the few remaining Callaway forces marched eastward and successfully stopped the oncoming Union troops from advancing into Fulton.
According to local historians:
The successful defense was merely an illusion. Tree logs, erected by the troops, resembled artillery in the shadows of campfires and deterred Union troops. Talks continued several days and secured a mutual cease fire agreement between the United Sates and Callaway County. Elated from the successful defense, citizens proclaimed their county The Kingdom of Callaway, a reference that remains today.
The Growth of Fulton
In the time leading up to and following the Civil War, Callaway County experienced tremendous growth. The town of Fulton was officially incorporated as a city on March 4, 1859, and when Jefferson Davis, the former president of the Confederate States of America, came to Fulton to give a speech at the old fairground (now Westminster College’s Priest Field) in 1875, over 10,000 people attended.
In 1847, the Missouri State Assembly selected Fulton as the site for the first mental health asylum west of the Mississippi, and the Assembly also established a school for the education of the deaf in Fulton in 1851. In that same year, the Presbyterian Church opened an all-male seminary called Fulton College, which would eventually become known as Westminster College.
Winston Churchill Visits Westminster College
The world spotlight briefly shone on the small town of Fulton, Missouri in 1946 when British Prime Minister and honored statesman Winston Churchill gave his famous “Iron Curtain” speech in the Westminster Gymnasium. It was here that Churchill uttered the sentence that would be written down in the history books as one of the first declarations of the Cold War, saying: “From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the continent.”
In observance of Churchill’s 1946 speech, numerous world leaders have since visited Fulton and Westminster College, including Lech Walesa, Margaret Thatcher, Harry S. Truman, Gerald R. Ford, Ronald W. Reagan, George W. Bush, Mikhail Gorbachev and NATO representatives.
A monument to Churchill’s inspirational address, made from pieces of the Berlin Wall and entitled “Break Through,” can still be viewed on the quad of the Westminster campus.
